Evening Walk Below Ancient Wu City Walls

Wan Bu Wu Gu Cheng Xia

Yi xing shu bu ji zhen jian
Feng xiu piao ran sheng yu han.
Zhu zhang qian tou shuang zhi qi
Fu tu jue ding yi diao pan.

Zui hong za di xie xun nuan.
Yun lian han kong zhang shui han.
Que xiang dong gao wang yan huo
Que chan xian ying hu lin dan.

Evening Walk Below Ancient Wu City Walls

Anticipate this walk, hazelnut trees and coarse grasses without limit
Wind-filled sleeves flutter like plumed writing brushes.
Lean on my cane in front of a pair of pheasants taking off
One hawk circling high overhead emerges.

Sunglow dusk drunk, warm red circle and soil
In the east, swells of cold water like white silk submerge the rocks.
Gaze into the distance, echoes and eastern shores with cooking fires and smoke
Lunar toad mirrors the Hu trees and a cinnabar red forest.

Notes:

Hu trees: A type of tall, deciduous tree.

Lunar toad: In Chinese mythology there is a toad that lives on the moon, who mixes up the potions of traditional medicine.
